Volvo Trucks The Hamster Stunt (Live Test 2)

Volvo’s latest stunt has Volvo Trucks showcasing their dynamic steering feature, which is meant to be so sensitive and easy to handle that a hamster can steer a truck up a very treacherous mountain path.

Unless you’re in construction, who’s really interested in Volvo Trucks or trucks at all? Well, as at the 16 September the Hamster FMX video had received an incredible 2.3 million views. Today it's on 3,635,497 views and counting. Not bad for a trucking video.

In order to demonstrate just how sensitive Volvo’s Dynamic Steering is, Volvo decided to attach a hamster wheel to the steering wheel and let Charlie the hamster steer a truck up a steep and winding dirt road. He couldn’t see out the window and he was guided by the ‘driver’ (Seon Rogers, a precision driver) with a carrot.

The setting was the Los Tres Cunados, Ourense, Spain. A beautiful but very dangerous quarry known for its challenging environment. The driver looked very nervous and had to keep an eye on the road, the helicopter flying around, the camera crew in front of the truck, the steep drop to the bottom all while guiding a hamster with a carrot. At one stage the truck comes perilously close to the edge of the cliff.

So can a hamster drive a 15-tonne truck? Watch cute little Charlie steer a brand new Volvo FMX in a rough quarry. Will he make it to the top? Most importantly of all does Charlie get the carrot?
